Monday marked the opening of the 2012 Pike County Fair, which will continue through Saturday, Aug. 4, with a wide variety of activities scheduled throughout the week.
Activities at the fair started on Sunday with the official opening Monday night.
“Some of the activities got started yesterday (Sunday). We had the gas and diesel truck pull yesterday, which saw a good turnout of people. All of the animals arrived yesterday, with the weigh-ins this morning (Monday),” said Bonnie Ward, Recording Secretary for the Pike County Fair.
Some of the activities surrounding the opening of the fair included awarding of scholarships and the crowning of the junior fair queen and a 4-H parade of clubs. Madison Weber, Ohio’s Fair Queen also visited the fair and meet with fair-goers.
Ward said the two biggest events that always draws people to the fairgrounds each year is the annual truck pull and the annual demolition derby.
“We are always going to have those events (truck pull and demolition derby), because everyone looks forward to those,” Ward said.
She said this years entertainment will feature a number of local bands.
On Tuesday night a Tug-a-Truck Pull will take place at the grandstand starting at 8 p.m. On Wednesday there will be wrestling in the grandstand starting at 8 p.m. On Thursday at 7 p.m. there will be a tractor pull in the grandstand at 7 p.m. The livestock sale will take place at 5 p.m. in the multi-puropse building with the demolition derby starting at 7 p.m. in the grandstand.
Saturday will feature another demolition derby at 7 p.m.
