Portsmouth Mayor David Malone, stood on the property of the Portsmouth city garage and read a proclamation declaring Friday Arbor Day in the city of Portsmouth, while city workers prepared to plant around a dozen trees.

“Whereas trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products. Whereas trees in our city increase property value, enhance the economic vitality of business areas and beautify our community,” Malone read from the proclamation. “Whereas trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal, Portsmouth, Ohio has been designated as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, and desires to continue its tree planting practice, Now, therefore, I David A. Malone, Mayor of the city of Portsmouth, do hereby proclaim April 26, 2013, as Arbor Day in the city of Portsmouth, and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and support efforts to produce and protect our trees and woodland.”

Malone also urged area residents to plant trees to replenish those used for the purposes he listed in the proclamation.

“These trees are going to go down Second Street,” City Service Director Bill Beaumont said. “There are trees down Second Street now, but over the years they’ve been torn out. So these are going to replace them. We’ll be planting them probably in the next couple of weeks.”

The trees are thornless type Honey Locusts. Arbor Day refers to a holiday in which people are encouraged to plant, care for and gain knowledge of trees. The day that was founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, and is observed on the last Friday of April.
