Spartans program on sale for $12,000

WAYNE ALLEN

PDT Staff Writer

A program from the 1932 Portsmouth Spartans vs. Chicago Bears football game featured on the Wednesday episode of Pawn Stars is still for sale. Asking price: $12,000.

Pawn shop worker Corey Harrison purchased the burnt program from an unnamed buyer for $2,750 under some skepticism of other cast members. Later in show the program was appraised for $10,000.

The 1932 game between the Portsmouth Spartans and Chicago Bears was believed to be the first playoff game in football. At the end of the 1932 regular season the Bears and the Spartans had identical records. The game determined the championship.

“This is the day where professional football was almost like professional wrestling. There were 100 different leagues in different states,” Harrison said during the show. “The Spartans were a cool team. They were from Portsmouth, Ohio, which even back then was a small town for a football team. They were asked to join the NFL and three years later they were sold to some guy in Detroit and changed to the Lions.”

According to Laura Herlovich, Pawn Stars spokeswoman, the program was purchased earlier this year.
