The 32nd Annual Scioto County Science Fair was held Jan. 18 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center’s Friends Center in Portsmouth, where students in grades 5-12 presented their science projects for evaluation.
The Science Fair provides students the opportunity for display and evaluation of their own inquiry-based scientific research projects. Sharee Price, Gifted Services Coordinator at the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center in New Boston, said science fairs help students improve their in-depth knowledge of science, develop communication skills, improve organizational abilities and develop their creativity and problem-solving skills.
This year 116 students participated in the Scioto County Science Fair from Clay, Green, Minford, New Boston, Portsmouth, Sciotoville Community, South Webster, Valley, and Wheelersburg. Among grades 7-12, Mikhaila Roe of Minford won grand prize, and Mary Martin of Wheelersburg was runner-up. Among grades 5-6, Jensen Warnock of Clay won grand prize, and Jaelyn Warnock won runner-up.
The Top Prizes in Grades 7–12 were Aashish Vemsani of Clay, Abigail Fuhrmann and Mikhaila Roe of Minford, Jaydren Guthrie, Abigail Halcomb, and Micah Simmons of Portsmouth, Austin Newton of Sciotoville Community Schools, Rachel Hooper, Madison Knight and Mary Martin of Wheelersburg. The Top Ten in Grades 5-6 were Jensen Warnock and Jaelyn Warnock of Clay, Riley Estep, Kaylee McGinnis and Josh Wiehle of Minford, Isaac Dever of New Boston, Sara Born of Portsmouth, Kinsey Carpenter of South Webster, Brandon Scarberry of Valley, and Gus Shoemaker of Wheelersburg.
Awards were also presented to Mikhaila Roe of Minford (The Scioto County Farm Bureau Award), Ethan Sanford of Clay (Gahm’s Pharmacy Medicine & Health Award), and Ryann Campbell and Kaitlin Ouimette of Portsmouth (Gahm’s Pharmacy II Medicine & Health Award).
Students’ projects are graded with a Superior, Excellent, Good or Satisfactory rating from a team of judges,and students are also eligible to win various awards provided by sponsors of this event. Judging panels are comprised of volunteers who are experienced in the field of science.
Students who receive a Superior rating at either their own school’s Science Fair or the Scioto County Science Fair may advance to the District Science Fair, which will be held at Shawnee State University on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Students receiving a Superior rating at the District Science Fair may then advance to the State Science Fair in Columbus, on May 11.
