Southern Ohio Medical Center’s annual Winter Wonderland activities begin this weekend with the start of the annual train show at the Friends Center in Portsmouth.

According to SOMC, the Winter Wonderland Train Show kicks off activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and again from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the Winter Wonderland Train Show is $2 per person, but children under of the age of three get in free. All of the money raised, during Winter Wonderland activities will go the SOMC Endowment Fund, said Jennifer Schackart, manager of the SOMC Friends Center.

Mark Harris, organizer of the train show, said preparation work has begun to setup the show.

“Trains have always been a Christmas and holiday season tradition. I think that’s one of the reasons people keep coming back year after year,” Harris said. “All of the parents and grandparents in the area remember the days when they had trains at Christmas time.”

He estimates there will be about 15 different layout at this years train show and about every size train represented.

Other activities with Winter Wonderland include a Polar Express Pajama Party on Monday, Nov. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $2 per person, free admission for children under the age of three.

“The Polar Express Pajama Party is a chance for local children to meet Santa Claus, watch the Polar Express, make crafts and play games like ‘Dunk The Elf,’” Schackart said.

On Friday, Nov. 30, is the Winter Wonderland Ball. According to SOMC, the Winter Wonderland Ball is a formal, black-tie affair that features a dinner, mingling and live entertainment. Tickets for the ball are $125 each. Winter Wonderland activities then conclude on Sunday, Dec. 2, with a Winter Wonderland Tea. The event is a luncheon and includes entertainment. Admission to the tea is $20 per person.

For more information about Winter Wonderland activities, contact the SOMC Friends Center at 740-356-6160.
