Nothing gets you out into the summer sun like a round of golf. And if you hit the greens on a regular basis or are just a scratch golfer, the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities Golf Scramble set for Saturday, June 29 at the Elks Country Club, may be just what you’re looking for.

The SCBDD began the golf scramble ten years ago to connect with the community and help raise funds for future levy campaigns.

“Our levy dollars are an important part of funding for the services we provide,” Chad Phipps, Team Lead for Adult Services at SCBDD, said. “Should we ever need to pass a levy, we want to make sure we have money already in place that will help us share our needs with the public.”

In November 2011, the voters of Scioto County renewed a 1-mill levy for the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities. That levy did not add taxes, but enabled the support needed to continue services for those with developmental disabilities. According to officials of the SCBDD, with the continual increase in costs and the many changes that take place at the national and state level, the need for funding is always on the horizon.

“Although we do receive some funding to help with providing services, without the support of the levy, a number of programs would not be possible,” Matt Purcell, Director of Finance at SCBDD, said. “We are thankful to our community for their continued support.”

Currently, the SCBDD provides various services to more than 500 individuals with developmental disabilities, ranging from newborns to the elderly. The SCBDD is able to provide a number of these services to the community with the financial support of levy dollars.

Registration for the Golf Scramble begins at 1:30 p.m. and a shotgun start is set for 2 p.m. Phipps said organizations and individuals can help support the event through various means: hole sponsorship; $100; skill prize sponsorship (such as longest drive, longest putt, etc.) $150, or by donating door prizes. He said monetary donations are also welcome. Entry to play in the scramble is $240 for a team and $60 for an individual and sponsorship of a Special Olympian to participate is $60. Anyone needing information can contact Phipps at 740-464-2236.
