NEW BOSTON — Lenore “Sugg” Hickman received a special award from the National Child Safety Council (NCSC) Thursday morning at Hickie’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers in New Boston, for her years of supporting the organization’s local school safety programs.
“Since the (New Boston Police) chief (Darrold Clark) began the program about 15 years ago, she has been a consistent sponsor and contributor to the program to make sure it is successful,” said NCSC Safety Coordinator Jim Speegle.
According to Speegle, the NCSC is the oldest and largest child safety organization in the United States and the only one that is non-profit. The organization provides safety programming to local schools each year, on topics such as bullying, stranger-danger, pedestrian safety, and more. Entertainers, such as Cowboy Bob and Safety Pup, host special programs in the school and are accompanied by a uniformed New Boston police officer with hand-out materials.
Hickman said she’s always pleased to support the community and the schools.
“It’s promoting safety for the kids, and anything I can do for the village I do,” Hickman said. “Anything for the school or the police department. I give to their Christmas fund, and at the school right before Christmas Break I donate hamburgers for their Hickie’s Hamburger eating contest. Sometimes I donate chili for their basketball team.”
She said she felt honored to receive the award, but said she never did it for any personal attention to herself.
In total, the NCSC this year received $1,477.50 from New Boston businesses. In addition to Hickie’s, the organization also received donations from A&M Refractories, Cooper’s Trucks and Accessories, Daymar Learning of Ohio, David Hanzel MD, Desco Federal Credit Union, Front Row Video, Herman Powell Insurance Agency, Interim Health Care, Nails Studio, New Boston Eagles Aeire 2271, Pap’s Carry Out, Pauley’s Plumbing, Southern Ohio Vault, and St. Monica Church.
“We’ll slowly be recognizing all of them, but we wanted to start here at Hickie’s,” Speegle said.
