The first and only female Mayor of New Boston, Marcella Newman, passed away Thursday at the age of 84.

Newman was a former employee of New Boston Schools and a former member of New Boston Village Council. Her short term in office marked the first and only time a woman has been mayor of New Boston. Her husband, Leroy Newman, was a New Boston fireman and died in 1981.

As New Boston Council President, Newman was appointed interim mayor following the resignation of Mayor Charles Ottney in October 1993 until current Mayor James Warren was elected in November 1993.

“Marcella was a wonderful person. She worked with me and with council, and she was very concerned about her community,” said Mayor Warren, whom also worked with Newman at Stanton Elementary School in New Boston. “She was always an active member of the community and she was active in the church. She was just a great person who cared about New Boston, and she will be deeply missed by this community.”

Funeral services are under the direction of D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston.

Ryan Scott Ottney can be reached at 740-353-3101, ext. 287, or rottney@civitasmedia.com.
