NEW BOSTON — The great poet Robert Frost told us in verse - “It’s knowing what to do with things that counts.” Haylee Lodwick knew it was time to cut her hair, and she knew what to do with it. She decided to donate it to Locks of Love.

“I’m getting my hair cut to donate it to a little girl,” Haylee said, as she waited her turn at Hollywood Hair in New Boston.

“She needed her hair cut anyway, so we figured that it might as well go toward someone who needs it,” Haylee’s mother, Tracy Lodwick said.

“It is just going to be bound in with some little girl’s hair,” Tracy Lodwick said. “Then that hair will be given to a little girl at Locks of Love. Locks of Love is an organization that uses hair from haircuts for cancer patients or other children who do not have hair. It’s really a very good organization down in Florida.”

Tracy Lodwick read about Locks of Love on the Internet and was prepared to send it off immediately.

“We will put it in a plastic bag and send it on its way to Florida, and then they will start binding it with the little girl’s hair,” Tracy Lodwick said.

Haylee’s actions inspired another woman in the salon to decide to also donate her son’s hair which she had kept in a ponytail for 15 years.

Beautician Courtney Antonaros told Haylee and Tracy she had prepared hair for Locks of Love many times before, and began the preparation by using several rubber bands to keep the hair in a ponytail, before cutting it with a pair of scissors, to the delight of the Lodwicks.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Information about Locks of Love is available at www.locksoflove.org. Their mailing address is Locks of Love, 234 Southern Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Fla., 33405-2701.

My daughter donated to Locks of Love back in December. A few months before she turned 5. We cut off 12.5 inches. She said she wanted to donate like mommy does because every girl should have something to put a bow in. She wanted to actually go make the wig herself and was a little disappointed when she found out she couldn't hand deliver it. I love my sweet girl.
