Portions of Third and Fourth streets were briefly closed Thursday, as 650 new Shawnee State University (SSU) students moved-in to university housing. SSU is expecting 400 more returning students to move into university housing on Sunday with classes starting on Monday.

“Our new students are coming to us from all over the U.S. - and we have 21 new international students who have been arriving since last week. Of those from the U.S., our new students are coming from as far away as California,” said Elizabeth Blevins, Director, of SSU Communications. “The 21 international students are from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Pakistan, Kosovo, Germany, Spain, Morocco, China, England, Nigeria, Thailand, India, Jordan, Vietnam, Brazil, and Ivory Coast.”

Once the students get moved in ‘Welcome Weekend” activities will take place. Among those activities will an event called SSU Gives Back.

According to Dr. Rita Rice Morris, President of SSU, “SSU Gives Back is a day of community service, which will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. More than 600 new students will volunteer with 38 different local agencies. Our students build connections with the community from day one and learn more about the volunteer opportunities available. Shawnee Gives Back has become an important annual event for our new students.”

Other activities for Welcome Weekend include today there will be activities such as, Academic Truths 101- “Get the truth about your major”, and Everything Shawnee Craft Night. Saturday’s activities include sessions such as “Bear” It All with Dr. Linda Koenig, Peace Corp Prep Program with Rita Haider, Studying Abroad with Rita Haider, Your Job Search Starts Now with Nikki Karabinis, Community Service Pays with Nikki Karabinism, How to Protect Yourself, and Living Your Life Online: Posts, Tweets & Check-Ins.
