The Ohio Heartland Council announced a number of improvements to Camp Molly Lauman in Lucasville.
Sara West, public relations director for the Ohio Heartland Council, said the improvements are coming as a result of a recent survey of Girl Scouts. The survey results revealed that only three percent of the 30,000 girl scouts within the council attend resident camp.
According to information released on www.gsooh.org, “our survey found that fifteen percent of girls go troop camping, and eight percent of girls attend day camp. Our goal is to create outdoor facilities that girls want to visit, and to increase girl participation at all of our council-owned properties. Our vision is to deliver programs girls want and need through our properties.”
West said the goal of the survey was to find out why some of the girls do not want to go to camp.
“We found out it’s because our camps have not changed in 50 or more years,” West said. “Based on the responses to our survey, the girls told us they want high adventure camps, they want zip lines and rock walls. They don’t want to sleep in tents, they want cabins with air conditioning. So we are doing those at Molly Lauman.”
Some of the improvements that will be made to Camp Molly Lauman include a challenge course with a zip line, additional water activities and new housing options. The new activities are in addition to the programming already in place such as horse back ridding, arts and crafts and many others.
Other changes including moving the Lake View Horse Ranch from its current location closer to the camp.
West said it’s to early to tell what the total investment will be.
“This is a big commitment on the part of our council. Camping is a big part of our programing. When we have programs our girls are not using we have to evaluate why it’s not being used and how we can improve.
