Scioto County Habitat for Humanity is set to host two groups this week for an Alternative Spring Break trip. Students will be coming from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte and Ursinus College of Collegeville, Pa, to work on habitat projects throughout the week of March 4-8.

“During their time with us the students will help us with several projects throughout Scioto County,” said Judy Meeker, Co-President Scioto County Habitat for Humanity.

For the past 24 years, more than 208,000 students have spent their school breaks volunteering across the country through Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge program, donating more than $20 million to Habitat affiliates.

“We’re grateful to Scioto County Habitat for Humanity for hosting the students as part of Collegiate Challenge,” said Jenn Skudlarek, Habitat for Humanity International’s manager of U.S. volunteer programs. “Their work together makes a meaningful difference and will have a lasting impact in communities across the country.”

Habitat for Humanity International is located in more than 100 countries and has completed more than 500,000 homes. According to www.sciotohabitat.org, “Habitat is committed to ending poverty housing, one home at a time, by building a decent home for a family in need. Scioto County Habitat for Humanity has found its message of offering a ‘hand up’ not a ‘handout’ has been well received in our community. Partnerships have been formed, and continue to be formed, which enable successful completion of this project, and another family in need helped.”

Scioto County Habitat has seven homes in Portsmouth, three in New Boston, one in West Portsmouth and one in South Webster.

Scioto County Habitat For Humanity has scheduled a Spring Fling Fundraiser for Saturday, March 23. The event will feature an evening of dinner, dancing and a silent auction with music of Doc Roc and the Remedies.

The event will be held at the Sodexo Ballroom in the University Center on the campus of Shawnee State University from 6 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
