WHEELERSBURG — Scott Akers, Director of Admissions at Best Care Nursing & Rehabilitation has taken a unique approach to raising money for the upcoming Portsmouth Alzheimer’s Walk.

He is putting a flock of pink flamingos in peoples yard, along with a sign that states, “you have been flocked by Team Best Care for the Portsmouth Alzheimer’s Walk.” The back of the sign adds, “to be de-flocked call 574-2558.”

Akers said typically people would give a donation to have their yard de-flocked.

“When we did a house the other day they called and asked to be de-flocked they gave us a donation and (named) other people they would like to see flocked,” Akers said.

He said he tries to flock a yard when people are not home, so when they come home they find them and get a good laugh out of it. He has received donations between $20 and $100 to de-flock a yard, he said.

“I have a list in Scioto County of about 100 people yet to be flocked,” Akers said. “I’m trying to move to Lawrence County now, because we have some here that are in Lawrence County.”

He said the response has been very positive so far, and he will be flocking different yards every night until the week of the Alzheimer’s Walk — which is Sept. 22. The walk starts at Market Square, located at 117 Market St., in Portsmouth. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. with the walk itself starting at 9:30 a.m. The distance of the walk is 2.5 miles.

Akers said Team Best Care has a number of other fundraisers scheduled leading up to the walk. For more information about those upcoming fundraisers, call Best Care Nursing & Rehab Center at 740-574-2558.
