Attempted murder charges in drive-by shooting

FRANK LEWIS

PDT Staff Writer

Scioto County authorities have arrested Lee F. York charging him with attempted murder after he reportedly shot a McDermott man multiple times in what turned out to be a drive-by shooting. York, 26, of McDermott, is charged with shooting Larry Scoggins, 39, of McDermott, then leaving the scene. Deputies continue to look for Steve Hodge, 25, of McDermott, whom they say was the driver of the vehicle York escaped in.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his 911 communication center received a call at 6:11 p.m. Monday from 241 Smith St., McDermott, stating that Scoggins showed up at that location with multiple gunshots. The victim was transported by squad to Southern Ohio Medical Center and later taken by squad to Grant Hospital in Columbus.

“The shooting actually occurred on Tatman Coe Road in McDermott, and it occurred while the victim was driving his vehicle, and the suspect was an occupant in the second vehicle, the two driving in opposite directions,” Donini said early Tuesday afternoon. “Just prior to the approach the suspect actually stood up in the vehicle through a sun roof and fired multiple rounds at the victim. And even after he passed the victim, he continued to fire rounds. The suspect is Lee York and I just recently have been advised that they’ve actually apprehended him.”

According to Donini, Scoggins had multiple gunshot wounds.

“I don’t know exactly how many times the victim was shot. They said multiple times,” Donini said. “Detective (Jodi) Conkel was there, and I recall in her narrative, at least three times. I think a couple or three times in the arm, and maybe one in the knee area.”

Donini said two other occupants were in Scoggins’ car and they were uninjured, but are witnesses in the shooting.

York had remained at large Tuesday morning and the Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant for his arrest on an attempted murder charge, after they consulted with Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn. York was later apprehended, while authorities continued to search for Hodge, the driver.

Donini said the incident is an ongoing investigation and if anybody locates the suspect vehicle or has any information on the location of the remaining suspect they should contact his office immediately. He said all calls will remain confidential.

Anyone with any information concerning the case should contact Detective Paul Blaine at 740-351-1092.

What a WASTE---the whole darn situation is such a waste! What on earth could possibly warrant stickup up in a sunroof & shooting someone??? NOTHING!! So, the shooter's wasting his life, the driver's wasting his, too, and who knows about the victim & witnesses. I am ashamed to call the McDermott area my former home. Thoroughly ashamed.
