Guest speaker, Rev. Clarence Parker delivered an inspirational message to the women during a bible study at Church Women United Area D Meeting Friday at Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

Church Women United Area D hosted their 11th annual meeting Friday at Cornerstone Methodist Church. The meeting was one of the series of meetings which convene throughout the state of Ohio annually in the month of September.
Church Women United is an organization that was formed in 1941, and is organized into more than 1, 200 local and state units in the United States and Puerto Rico.
It is a racially, culturally, and theologically diverse organizational network of women, who celebrate unity in diversity and work together for a world of peace and justice.
For each state that is represented, it is divided into parts by alphabet. The state of Ohio is divided into five sections for Church Women United, referred to as Areas, A, B, C, and D.
Scioto County is known as Area D, of which Shelby Powell serves as the current local president. Powell said she was pleased with the turn out of more than 50 women for the Area D.
The theme for the 2012 Area D Meeting was, “God’s Ambassadors Fulfilling a Mission for Peace.”
“We have had a wonderful day here at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. We’ve had wonderful speakers. I am very pleased with the turnout, we have had people from all over the state,” Powell said.
The Area D Meeting was an all-day event, and the day’s festivities opened with a welcome and refreshments, followed by a lineup of guest speakers which included topics such as bullying and human trafficking.
Speakers from Church World Service, Shawnee Mental Health, and American Red Cross also addressed the group.
Sergeant John Koch of the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics unit, and member of the Scioto County Drug Task Force, brought a display of illegal drugs that circulate on the streets of Scioto County.
Koch informed the group of the dangers of the drugs, and their negative impact upon Scioto County.
Edith Woodard of Lima Ohio, is the current President of Church Women United for the state of Ohio. Woodard said that she was pleased with everything that transpired during the Area D meeting.
“Its has been fantastic. I learned a lot from the different sessions, particularly the session about bullying, which was presented by Shawnee State student, Jordan Nickles. He was a great speaker, and I know that through his story that he is going to help a lot of young people,” Woodard said.
Jordan Nickles, 2012 salutatorian at Northwest High School, and current Shawnee State University student, talked with the group about his own personal experience of being bullied in how school, and the difficulty of coping with being bullied.
Nickles also discussed how he overcame the trauma associated with bullying through his faith.
The afternoon portion of the meeting included with lunch, followed by a bible study, with guest speaker, Rev. Clarence Parker of Pleasant Green Baptist Church.
Parker shared bible-based commentary on New Testament scriptures and encouraged the women to continue to endeavor to be peacemakers in their families, churches, and society.
Powell said that she is already looking forward to next year’s Area D Meeting.
