Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 on the Shawnee State University (SSU) Alumni Green.

“This is exciting,” said Kay Reynolds, County Chairwoman for the Romney Ryan campaign.

She said since the news broke of the visit late Tuesday, she has been getting phone calls asking about details, tickets and yard signs.

She said early buzz about the event was generated from a story that appeared on the Daily Times website Tuesday night.

Senator Rob Portman and Second Congressional District candidate Dr. Brad Wenstrup are expected to be in attendance at the rally is.

“This is going to huge for our area. The fact that he (Romney) cares enough to come to Scioto County and bring his message of prosperity,” said Bryan Davis

Scioto County Rep. Party Communications Co-Chair. “I’m excited to hear what he has to say, I think we are going to have a huge crowd. I’m excited to hear what he has to say about jobs. I’m also excited to hear his plans to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something that’s more sustainable. He will answer those questions, no doubt.”

Davis said the event is expected to bring 5,000 to 7,000 people from across the tri-state.

Romney will be accompanied to the SSU Alumni Green with country music artist Jamie O’Neal. Admission will open at 11:30 a.m. with the Republican candidate’s speech scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Tickets can be picked up at the Portsmouth Republican headquarters at 612 Sixth Street in Portsmouth Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets can also be acquired from MittRomney.com/OH.

Romney was in Chillicothe, Ohio Aug. 14 to address supporters in front of the Ross County Courthouse.

The Republican candidate for president was in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio for a campaign visit Tuesday, while President Obama spoke to Ohio State University students in Columbus.

Ohio is a key state in the upcoming election. With 18 electoral votes, no Republican has won the presidency without Ohio. To win the election without carrying Ohio, Romney would have to carry every other battleground state with the exception of New Hampshire.

“There isn’t any question that he has breathed new life and new energy into the Republican Party,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Tuesday on a conference call with reporters. “We’re seeing that there is greater intensity among Republicans and a great willingness to get out and vote and participate than we’re seeing with Democrats.”

Obama has led Romney in Ohio polling for several weeks.

The event will be free and open to the public. Ticketing information was not available at press time. Check www.portsmouth-dailytimes.com for the latest information.

Information from Ben Feller and Kasie Hunt of the Associated Press was used in this report.
