The Scioto County Republican Party confirmed to the Daily Times Tuesday night that Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney will be in Portsmouth Saturday to meet with supporters. According information released by the party, the event will take place in the fields near Spartan Stadium between 9 a.m. and noon.

Expected to be in attendance is Senator Rob Portman, U.S. Representative Bill Johnson and Second Congressional District candidate Dr. Brad Wenstrup. The event will be free and open to the public.

According to party representatives, more details will be revealed about the event as they become available.

Romney was in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio for a campaign visit Tuesday, while Obama spoke to Ohio State University students in Columbus.

Ohio is a key state in the upcoming election. With 18 electoral votes, no Republican has won the presidency without Ohio. To win the election without carrying Ohio, Romney would have to carry every other battleground state with the exception of New Hampshire.

“There isn’t any question that he has breathed new life and new energy into the Republican Party,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Tuesday on a conference call with reporters. “We’re seeing that there is greater intensity among Republicans and a great willingness to get out and vote and participate than we’re seeing with Democrats.”

Obama has led Romney in Ohio polling for several weeks.

Information from Ben Feller and Kasie Hunt of the Associated Press was used in this report.

This is a great opportunity for Romney to see the real problems that face communities like ours - the closed steel mills, the empty storefronts, the absence of business and industry in what used to be a thriving piece of America.

I hope that all Scioto County citizens will be gracious and welcoming regardless of their political views. If not, know that you embarrass yourself as well as the town when you do turn into the jackals we know you are.
