Scioto County Commissioner-elect Doug Coleman and Scioto County Coroner-elect Dr. Darren Adams were sworn into office Friday afternoon in a ceremony held in the lobby of the Scioto County Court House.

Surrounded by family and friends, Coleman was sworn in by former State Representative Todd Book.

“It’s a proud day for Doug Coleman and for his family. Doug comes from a very large family — six brothers and two sisters, one of those sisters happens to be my mother so, Doug’s my uncle. He like I, was raised on Slab Run on the west side. It’s not a place for high living but, you learn a lot, like how to take care of yourself and how to take care of other people,” Book said. “Doug has that experience in his background and I think that will help make him a fantastic county commissioner.”

Book said he and a team of people have spent a lot of time over the last couple of months helping Coleman prepare to become county commissioner.

“I’ve been amazed at the dedication and excitement that he has shown for the job. I expect him to do great things for our county,” Book said.

After being sworn into office Coleman addressed those in attendance and thanked supporters.

“I can’t emphasize this enough, everybody in the county has got to work together to make Scioto County better. Everybody in the county that wants to be involved or wants to share their input on something should get a hold of me,” Coleman said. “I am here to listen.”

He said one of the first things the county has to do is get out from under the fiscal emergency status imposed by the auditor of state.

“That’s one of the first things we have to do. We’ve got to get our budget sound. If you don’t have the money you don’t spend it, it’s as simple as that, ” Coleman said.

Coleman said when he officially takes office as Scioto County Commissioner on Jan. 2 he plans on hitting the ground running.

In November Adams was officially elected to his first term as Scioto County Coroner.

Previously, Adams was appointed to finish the unexpired term of Dr. Terry Johnson who resigned when he was elected state representative.

“We are going to continue to do the great work of this office. Dr. Johnson had a pretty sound office, it’s a well-oiled machine at this point. We are going to continue to work on identifying drug deaths in our county and try to map those out,” Adams said. “We do not have the final tally for this year but, I think drug deaths are starting to dip down a little. I think it’s helped that we shutdown the pill mills, we will wait for the final numbers to come out.”

Adams said those numbers should be available midway through the first quarter of next year.

Adams was sworn into office by Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn.
