Hill View residents catch Olympics spirit

FRANK LEWIS

PDT Staff Writer

Physical Therapy Assistant M.J. Kelly decided it was time for the residents at Hill View Retirement Center in Portsmouth to get in step with the Olympics going on this week in London, so, with the help of other members of the staff, games were created that would incorporate the physical therapy with the summer Olympics, and it was – “let the games begin.”

“We’ve done several games, different kinds of games and events, with our people in therapy as part of their exercise routine for the day,” Emily Gillette, Occupational Therapy Assistant, said. “We did a lot of preparation with them, put up posters, trying to get them oriented with what was going on in the world, and talked about the different countries involved, colored some flags, hung some flags from different countries that are involved in the summer Olympics.”

After a week of games and exercise, the participants on the third floor health care were given medals in an awards ceremony on Friday afternoon.

“A lot of our residents on the third floor, which is our Health Care floor, are all in support of our summer Olympics,” Kathy Vogler said. “A lot of them like to watch the summer Olympics, also they are receiving therapy. And it gives them more of a motivation. They like something different. They like being involved, and it’s a lot of fun for them. It’s just similar to the Senior Olympics out at the (Scioto County) Fairgrounds. It is like they are actually there, at the Olympics, and it is like they are a part of the summer Olympics.”
