Wheelersburg man killed in shooting

WAYNE ALLEN

PDT Staff Writer

WHEELERSBURG — Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said one man is dead following a shooting that occurred Thursday night on Old Gallia Pike in Wheelersburg.

According to information released Friday morning, a 911 call was received at 10:21 p.m., “the caller stated that his son had been involved in a shooting at this location,” Donini said. When deputies and detectives responded to the call, he said, they found Steve Holsinger, age 33, of 9550 Old Gallia Pike, Wheelersburg, lying deceased in the yard.

Donini said Holsinger died from a gunshot wound. The shooter has been identified as Tyler Staker, age 22, of Portsmouth.

Donini stated during this investigation his detectives learned that Staker and his father had responded to the location of the shooting to repossess a piece of equipment that was purchased from their business that was not paid in full.

According to Donini, detectives determined that Staker and his father had been at the location for more than an hour knocking on the door in attempts to retrieve the equipment.

Donini said that Holsinger came out onto the porch at approximately 10:20 p.m. with a gun in his hand and very upset. A witness told detectives that he did put the gun into his pocket for a short time, then got upset and pulled out the gun telling Staker and his father that they had three seconds to get off his property, then Holsinger raised the weapon pointing it at the younger Staker’s face.

At this time is when Tyler reportedly shot the deceased several times, Donini said. Holsinger’s body was sent to the Montgomery County Morgue for an autopsy, and evidence is being sent to BCI&I in London, Ohio.

Staker has not been arrested at this time, Donini said, but a case is being forwarded to the Scioto County Grand Jury for consideration. He asks anyone with more information about this case to contact Det. Jodi Conkel at 740-351-1091.

Tyler Staker should have been arrested on the spot. No legitimate businessman shows up after 10 p.m. to ask about payment on anything, unless there's something shady with the deal.

Another example of Ohio NON-justice.

Steve Holsinger caused his own death! He chose to not pay for his tractor. He chose to come out of his house with a gun and not prepared to use it. Anyone that displays or threatens to have a gun better be prepared to use it or someone else might. Just like happened here. I'm not saying I agree with what Tyler Staker and his father did but if Steve would have paid for what he took and did not come out pointing a gun he would be alive today.

To Steve's wife, will you please let David and Jennifer know when Steve's services are gonna be, so that they can tell my mom who will tell me. I am David's sister, so I have known Steve for many years. since we were teenagers in fact. But I would like to go to Steve's services to pay my respect to him and you, and your family. Thank you so much. My thoughts and prayers and condolences are with you all.

This does not make any sense to me. I don't know of any business that operates this way. I know that I do not want to do business with someone like this. To go to the house at night or even in the evening is no way to get something returned or to collect money. I will not be doing any business with them!!! Why wasn't the sheriff called sooner?

i dont mean to defend anybody here because obviously this was handled the wrong way but this whole situation could have been avoided if he just paid his bills or returned the mower plain and simple. to many people living outside their means. who needs a 700 dollar mower? i dont know the guy who was shot personally but the stakers are good people trying to run a business. Thats hard to do in our area and people that dont oay their bills make it that much harder.

I won't pretend to know why someone "living outside their means" needed a $700 mower. Maybe he was trying to make some extra money doing lawn work and saw it as an investment. Maybe he just wanted a nice lawn for his kids to play on. The reasons are irrelevant. A man is dead. Over $700. And it could have been avoided if those there to repo it had simply gone to the police after the homeowner refused to answer, instead of, by their own admission if the paper is to be believed, harassing the homeowner for over an hour. Greed and impatience is why this man died, plain and simple.

Good people or not......you can not take the law into your own hands. Yes they should have been paid or obtained possesion of the lawn mower BUT I guess any chance of profit will go into lawyer fees now. Should have let the law handle it in the first place. If you feel the need to have to take a loaded firearm then you are expecting trouble. Why go at night instead in the daytime? Seems to be a very ill planned adventure......

This just does not sound right to me either. Any normal business would go in day light hours to get their property back. And to stand there and knock for a hour? Also when the man walked on the porch, and told them to leave, then it was time to go and call a cop, not to kill the man.

I have known Jen for as long as we have been living and know that he was a loving husband and amazing father. My question is, why does a business show up at 10:30 at night with guns and pound on doors for over an hour? Why didn't they call the sheriff beforehand or deal with the issue during normal hours? I am sure at this hour they were in bed. They also have small children so why bring that all there? I hope that the family who lost such a loving person is given the justice they deserve!
