Jim Detty wrote: William is correct about the purpose of the event, it was discussed a couple of months ago. Area farmers would come into their towns and have festivals (similar to today’s street fairs) during the harvest season to sell their goods to the public, meet other farmers in the area and trade things back and forth, etc. Portsmouth wanted to be unique and change the spelling of the words to better advertise the Portsmouth Carnival.
