The students, teachers and staff of Portsmouth Elementary School celebrated the release of the newest “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book, “The Third Wheel” with Wimpy Kid Day on Wednesday.

According to Lori Lemaster, Study Island Instructor at Portsmouth Elementary the day was full of activities surrounding the release of the book. She said since the release of the book Tuesday, the school cannot keep the book on the library shelves.

“It’s always checked out with a waiting list. In response we decided to have a Wimpy Wednesday to celebrate the book,” Lemaster said.

She said everyone in the building was encouraged to wear brown Wednesday and the principal, Dana Pollock, was given the, ‘cheese touch.’ That meant Pollock spent most of the day on the roof of the building to avoid contact with others.

“In the first Wimpy Kid book, there was a piece of moldy cheese found on the playground. If you touch this cheese you had the cheese touch and you were banished. I touched the moldy cheese, so I’ve been banished to the roof,” Pollock said.

She said if someone touches you that has the cheese touch and you do not have your fingers crossed you then have the cheese touch. Pollock said throughout the day she would come down from the roof and wonder the halls looking to give someone the cheese touch.

“This is National Young Readers Week and to celebrate that week we decided celebrate the release of the latest Wimpy Kid book, so the kids have been having activities all day long surrounding the release of the book,” Pollock said.

Lemaster said this is the first school-wide book themed activity of the school year. She said other similar activities are planned throughout the school year.
