Edith Corns, 81

Edith Anne Corns, 81, of McDermott, passed away early Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was born Aug. 19, 1931, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Katherine Louise Scott Amick.

Surviving is her husband, William “Bill” Henry Corns, whom she married April 16, 1954, in Portsmouth; all totaled, they spent over 60 years of their lives together. Edith had three daughters, Susan Annette Corns of Columbus, April Nannette (Jeff) Kirkendall of Wheelersburg, and Lana Lannette Speas of Lucasville; and two grandchildren, Lannette Renae Speas of Columbus, and Michael William Kirkendall of Wheelersburg. She is also survivied by a niece, Laura Amick Dozios of Lake Forest, ILL.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Russell Amick and Kenneth Russell Amick.

In 1993, Edith retired from the Portsmouth City Schools. She had been a teacher at McKinley and Harding Schools where she taught 8th and 5th grade. She was a lifetime member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ and had been involved in nearly every aspect of the church’s leadership. Edith was a 1949 Portsmouth High School graduate, and she received a Bachelor of Education from Ohio University. While attending OU she was a member of an on-campus religious sorority. She was also a member of the local retired teachers’ organization. Edith was a lifetime fan of The Ohio State University Buckeye Football and Basketball programs and the Green Bay Packers.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Rev. Tom Williams and Rev. Herb Goetz officiating. She will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery.

The family will welcome all who cared for Edith at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
