On Tuesday, Native American author and Shawnee Chief emeritus Jim Great Elk Waters will launch the release of his new book, “View From the Medicine Lodge – 2012” at the Boneyfiddle Art Center, at Second and Court streets in Portsmouth.

Waters will be reading from his new book, sharing Shawnee lore and signing books at Boneyfiddle Arts Center, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He is a native Scioto County resident. For more than 25 years he has been a tribal leader, pipe carrier and teacher. In these roles he has spoken before Congress and the United Nations on Native American rights, was principal in the first leg of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial re-enactment, and was named an Ambassador of Peace in 2004.

He premiered his book at the Book Expo 2002 in New York City with his then-publisher Seven Locks Press. In 2004, it was named one of the top 100 Native American titles. In 2011, Waters set forth to rewrite and edit the original book. The result is a fresh new look at the “Medicine Lodge” with historic corrections, revisions and the addition of several new never-published chapters.

Waters is an award-winning author, actor, producer and fine artist. He now owns the publishing company Forest Edge, and is the author of several other books, in addition to “View 2012” and his Indian genealogy book, “So your Grandmother was a genuine Indian Princess.”

On May 23, he will teach a comprehensive seminar on “Your Hidden Books Within,” a fast and easy ways to write Your Hidden Book, and June 19 he will present a lecture on “The First People of the Scioto and Ohio River Confluence,” through the eyes of the Ancestors.
