Virginia “Jennie” Wheeler of McDermott passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at SOMC Hospice after a lengthy illness.

She was born Dec. 10, 1924, to the late Reuben Lee and Lula Stockton Greene in Columbus, NC. She attended the Candy Run United Baptist Church with her late husband Clyde. After his death, she attended Beech Fork Baptist Church in Otway until sickness prevented her from attending.

She was a member of the Lucasville Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in which she participated for many, many years.

She worked at The Bake Shoppe on Sixth Street in Portsmouth until it closed. She then worked at Clare Cleaners and retired in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Paul Hershey, May 10, 1977. She then married Clyde H. Wheeler Sept. 2, 1980, who preceded her in death on June 23, 2005. She moved to the Riverview Retirement Center in Portsmouth in 2008 and lived there until sickness prevented her from living alone. She then became a resident of Rest Haven Rehab Facility in McDermott where she resided until she became terminally ill last Thursday.

She was also preceded in death by Paul Hershey’s children, Barbara Rhymer and Jack Hershey; and Clyde Wheeler’s stepson, David (Norma) Shoemaker.

She is survived by her loving extended family and caregivers, James and Janice Baldwin of McDermott who were like the son and daughter she never had, and their family, Keith (Julie), Todd, Kyle (Chelsee) McCain, Mark (Missy) Spradlin, all of McDermott. She always looked forward to spending the holidays with them and always had a wonderful time.

She is also survived by her first husband’s son, Dwight (Claudette) Hershey and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Clyde’s stepgrandchildren, Steve (Judy) Shoemaker and Don (Pam) Ballengee, both of McDermott. She had many, many friends and always made new ones wherever she went. She will be truly missed by all.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville, with the Rev. Brian Baer officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and an hour before the funeral on Friday. Burial will follow in Scioto Burial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th St., Portsmouth, OH 45662.

Her family and friends would like to thank everyone at the SOMC Hospice and the Rest Haven Facility for the wonderful care during her illness.
