The Scioto County Relay For Life will hold a kick off event Thursday for its 2012 relay.

“We are getting a head start this year because we have a lot of work to do,” said Rosie Williams, chairwoman of Scioto County Relay For Life.

Event organizers say the fundraising goal for 2012 is $94,000. In 2010, relay participants raised $89,000.

Williams said that money is used to continue working toward cures, research and development of new and more efficient medication, and to help patients with their many needs.

“We keep doing better each year, but we can’t ever say we’ve done enough. I lost my own mother to cancer; I have employees, friends and customers that have lost loved ones. It is devastating in so many ways. I count it a privilege that I have the opportunity to be able to ‘fight like a girl,’ or in other words give some all-out effort to a cause that can help us all,” Williams said. “We are anxious to get started on this year’s relay.”

Thursday's event will last from 6 to 8 p.m.at the SOMC Cancer Center.
