The Tri-State Junior Golf Tour made its latest stop at Shawnee State Golf Resort Thursday.

Earlier in the week, TSJGT co-directors Jason and Joe VanDeusen announced that Thursday’s leg of the tour would feature younger age divisions. For the first time since the tour’s inception in 1982, a seven and eight-year-old division and a six and under division competed.

“It went very well and was very smooth,” Jason VanDeusen said. “We added another five or six golfers that we wouldn’t have had and hopefully the word gets out so we can add even more.”

With the current level of interest, the tour will feature the younger age divisions again at Guyan Country Club July 27.

As with any other outdoor activity the past two weeks, the golfers had to contend with temperatures in the upper 90s. Fortunately, the Shawnee State Golf Resort was prepared.

“Tyson Phillips, the former tour director and pro at Shawnee, had volunteers that followed the groups of kids around the course with ice water,” Jason VanDeusen said. “We appreciated that very much and there were no problems from the heat because of it.”

Despite the sizzling temperatures, many impressive performances, including the first every top-finishers in the new age divisions, were recorded.

In the six and under division, Cameron Phillips had the lowest score with a 41 while Jacob Lemley won the seven and eight-year-old division with a 42.

Andy Michael took the 10-12 Division with a low score of 17 in the first flight.

Mitchel McFarland took the 13-15 Division by 14 strokes with a final score of 68.

Drew Oxley edged out Darby High with a score of 85 in the 16-18 Division.

The TSJGT travels Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland July 9 then visits Twin Solos in Lavalette on July 17. Play will wrap up at Guyan Golf and Country Club on July 27.
