Move over, hokey pokey. It’s officially basketball season and THIS is what it’s all about.

I know football gets top billing in the minds and hearts of many around the area, but there is nothing like basketball season.

You’ve got five people working in unison in tight spaces with momentum swings and back-and-forth action unlike any other sport. In addition, the gyms are often packed with fans right on top of the action, adding to the exciting atmosphere.

Making things more exciting, you will often find a situation when it comes down to one play and everyone in the gym knows who is getting the ball.  That player essentially says “Here I come. Try to stop me” And puts the team on their back to lead them to victory… or at least put on a great show in the attempt.

There have already been moments like this in area gyms this season, and I was privileged enough to cover one of these exciting finishes last night.

On the road at South Webster, Minford’s Kendra Justice hit a three from well beyond the arc as time expired to give the Lady Falcons a three-point win. Though she had yet to make a field goal, the game’s final 1.5 seconds were Justice’s time to shine, and she was up to the occasion.

It was a play I’m sure she will never forget, and one of the many highlights we are sure to have this basketball season.

While I don’t know when the next magical, memorable moment on the hardwood will be, I can’t wait to get back on the baseline in a local gym to find out.
