Oak Hill’s Jesse Slone (10) prepares to take the snap during a playoff game against Ridgewood. Slone was named the Division V Offensive co-player of the year as part of the Associated Press All-Southeast District team awards released Tuesday.
The 2009 Associated Press All-Southeast District Football Team was released Tuesday with Oak Hill quarterback Jesse Slone and Minford linebacker Tyler Gaines making a it almost an SOC sweep for offensive and defensive Player of the Year honors in Division V. Slone spilt the offensive award with Nelsonville-York's Derek Arnold.
The Oaks, winners of the SOC I and owners of a perfect 10-0 regular season record had seven players on the all-district team. Head coach Greg Phillips took home Coach of the Year honors for Oak Hill.
Slone led the Oaks this season on offense, throwing 30 touchdowns and just one interception.
"He's a leader," Phillips said of Slone. "He's not super, super vocal but he will say some stuff... He's a 3.99 student trying to win the valedictorian this year in school. He's a good young man and he means a lot to our team."
As for his own award, Phillips said it was flattering considering the caliber of other coaches in the district.
"Our kids are great and if it wasn't for them, (this award) wouldn't be there," Phillips said.
Gaines, a sophomore, had a stellar season for Minford on defense, totaling 95 tackles and making a critical stop on on a two-point conversion attempt by Wheelersburg to essentially seal the victory in that game.
"Tyler is very deserving of the award," Minford coach Brent Daniels said. "He was a mainstay on our defense this year and made a lot big plays for us."
The SOC also picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors in Division VI as Symmes Valley's Kyle Bowen garnered the award. Vikings coach Rusty Wright earned Division VI Coach of the Year honors.
The area was well represented in first team selections as well.
In Division III Waverly's Derek Roback made first team on offense and Raushaun Conley was a first team defensive pick.
In Division IV, Caleb Southworth and Jordan Miller of Piketon made first team offense and defense respectively.
For Portsmouth, SEOAL South Player of the Year Josh Myers made the first team offense along with Brennan Howard. Casey Sanders and Tre Underwood made the defensive first team.
Trevon Pendleton made the first team offense for West and Alex Thompson and Mark Murphy each made the defensive first team.
Tyson Brown was a first team defensive selection for Northwest.
Ironton's selections for first team included Tres Wilks, Jon Monnig and Erin Edens with Monnig taking Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Ironton coach Bob Lutz may have become the winningest coach in Ohio high school football history this season but he shared the Coach of the Year honors with Albany Alexander coach Sean Arno.
Division V brought the most area selections.
On first team offense the Oaks had Joey Maynard, Kyle Ondera, Drew Cannon, Westen Hale and Slone. On defense lineman Chris Fairchild made first team.
Minford had several players on first team including quarterback Aaron Oesch on offense and Gaines on defense. Also making first team were T.J. Alley, Mark Slone and Matt Gilliam.
Wheelersburg’s Tyler Craigmiles and Brandon Schankweiler led the Pirates offensive selections along with Zach Frowine while C.J. Adkins and Tyler Lang made the defensive team.
For Valley, Blake Yates, Zach Utley, B.J. Coleman and Brice Crabtree made first team.
In Division VI, Evan Herrell was Symmes Valley's lone offensive selection for first team but Hunter Boggs, Justin Payne, Tyler Easthom and Bowen earned defensive first team honors.
Notre Dame quarterback Brock Hannah was a first team offensive selection with teammate Jeff Emnett making the first team defense.
