Ruth Griffin, 97

Ruth Elverda Griffin, 97, of Wheelersburg, a former Portsmouth resident, passed away at her daughter’s home in Wheelersburg, Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. She was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Carrollton to the late Leslie Derling and Ola Fay Porter Holmes. Ruth was member of the First Lutheran Church, where she was the former treasurer and had attended Wheelersburg Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She also was an AARP member, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star # 424, where she was a past treasurer, USSA , a former board member of the Area Agency on Aging and a member of the Over 55 Clubs in Wheelersburg, Portsmouth and New Boston. Ruth was also a 1932 graduate of Canton McKinley High School.

She was also preceded in death Nov. 10, 1999, by her husband, the former Mayor of Portsmouth and Scioto County Commissioner, Howard Ralph Griffin. They were joined in marriage in Canton on Oct. 31, 1933.

Surviving are her two daughters; Fay Elizabeth (Richard) Jackson of Wheelersburg and Leona Ruth (William) Otis of Toledo; one son, Ralph Derling (Shirley) Griffin of Bradner; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Ruth was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Charlotte Dray and Virginia E. Faniola.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Bradley Brandt officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m., until the funeral hour.

Eastern Star services will be conducted on Tuesday at 8 p.m.. at the funeral home.

The family’s favorite charity is SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
