The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is partnering with Shawnee State Park to offer residents of Scioto County an opportunity to environmentally recycle live Christmas Trees.

"This is our first year with the Christmas tree recycling in Scioto County. We (the solid waste district) have been doing this for several years in Lawrence County. We thought we would extend the program this year into Scioto and see how it would be received," Dan Palmer, director of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District, said.

Palmer and his staff inquired about holding the event in Portsmouth. City Service Director Chris Murphy informed them the city converts the trees to mulch. They then turned to Shawnee State Park.

There will be three drop-off sites located throughout the county.

One site will be at the Porter Township Building, another at Turkey Creek Lake Parking Lot and the third site at the Clay Township Pool site in Rosemount..

The trees must be stripped of all ornaments and decorations. The collection is for live trees only. Artificial trees will not be accepted.

Signs will be installed at the sites indicating a drop-off site.

"When the trees are collected they will be taken to Shawnee State Park. The trees collected will be turned into fish habitats," Palmer said.

The event will take place from December 29
