About 35 names of needy children remain on the trees with just a few days to go as a part of the Greenup County (Ky.) Family Resource Center’s program to provide Christmas for school children and their siblings.
The trees are located at several area banks including City National Bank, First & Peoples, Peoples, and Home Federal in Greenup, and First and Peoples and American Savings Bank in South Shore, Ky.
“The names come from the schools,” Sharon Dillow of the Greenup County Family Resource Center said. “All of the families that have a child in school and their siblings are taken care of. We have another center that does the babies and the ones that don’t have anyone in school.”
Dillow said all the schools in Greenup County work together on the project every year. This year’s list started with 419 names.
“We have them do an application when they come into school,” Dillow said. “And we go by their income or their circumstances. And we make sure they aren’t duplicated somewhere else in the system.”
Dillow was asked what types of gifts are needed.
“What we try to do is get them an outfit, shoes and a couple of toys,” Dillow said. “Some people go the whole nine yards and get underwear, socks, and pajamas. But we try to aim for an outfit, shoes and toys.”
Dillow said the Sons of the American Legion, Post 276 in South Shore presented the organization with 40 food vouchers Tuesday afternoon.
Dillow said the way a person can sponsor a child is to choose a tag from the tree, fill out the bottom of the tag and leave it with a bank employee, then return the gifts to the bank with the upper part of the tag attached by Dec. 14.
“If they can’t stop into the bank they can call our number, (606) 932-6513 and we can do that, or they can make a donation,” Dillow said. “They can make checks payable to the Greenup Family Resource Center.”
