Americans across the land acknowledge the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the nation in different ways.

Each year, citizens come together to honor those lost and solemn and meaningful events are organized to remember that day the twin towers in lower Manhattan, the Pentagon in Virginia, and a field in Pennsylvania were the sites of devastation, at the cost of thousands of lives.

One local insitution has, for the last several years, used a unique way of showing their appreciation of those who serve the public. Cash Express in South Shore, Kentucky, takes cakes decorated with the American flag to law enforcement agencies and fire departments in the region. One of those stops was made at the New Boston Police Department.

“We’re just thanking the community and the firefighters for everything they did on 9/11 in remembrance of that day and for the things they do every day,” Dorothy Rice of Cash Express said. “They put their lives on the line for us and we appreciate it.”

On top of the cake was a large card. And inside the card multiple messages from an appreciative community.

“We have the community and the businesses sign it to thank the guys as well,” Rice said. “We just wanted to present it to them today.”

Recipients of the cakes were flattered by the gesture.

“This is a good honor to receive this,” New Boston Firefighter John Williams said. “It is awfully nice that people think of us. But, it’s just our job.”

Tuesday afternoon members of the Portsmouth Police Department filed into the command center to enjoy the cake they had also been presented earlier in the day.
