She was born in Wellston on July 11, 1934, daughter of the late Ansel Leland Ervin and Susanna Samuel Ervin.
She was a 1952 graduate of Wellston High School and a member of the Hope United Methodist Church of Wellston. She was a newspaper reporter for many years for the Wellston Sentinel, the Wellston Sentry, and the Athens Messenger. She was one of the first class to graduate as EMTs in Wellston. She was a former Wellston Mothers’ Club “Mother of the Year.” She enjoyed painting pictures, working in her flowers and baking, and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter E. Hunter; her second husband, Roy J. Cross; and a daughter, Deborah Hunter Jordan. Also she was preceded by Paul Ervin and Roger Ervin.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and Gary Canter and Tina and Tom Brenner of Wellston; two brothers, Louis R. Ervin of Columbus, Ohio, and Robert D. (Debbie) Ervin of Wellston; three sisters, Alice (Ken) Brooks of Columbus, Ohio, Ruth (Loren) Jolly of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Barbara House of Wellston; five grandchildren, Cory (Jodie) Canter of Amanda, Ohio, Adam (Katie) Canter of Wellston, Erin (Todd) Dupree of Richmond Hill, Ga., Jason Brenner of Savannah, Ga., and Jennifer Brenner of Logan, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Caleb and Grant Dupree, Colin and Evan Canter, and Lauren Schuldt; four stepchildren, Mary (David) McFarland, Laura (Keith) Chapman, Sarah Cross, and Thom (Sue) Cross; two stepgrandchildren, Julia and Douglas Chapman; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston, with the Rev. Glen Herman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wellston. Friends may call at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel in Wellston on Sunday from 4 until 8 p.m.
