Get runners on, get runners over, get runners in. Small ball was the name of the game in Thursday's Del Rice League game between DESCO and Glockner's.
DESCO left ten runners stranded on the basepaths, seven were left in scoring position.
“We had our opportunities to come back and win this game, just one big hit here or there, “said DESCO coach Danny Frantz. “I think we could've won this game, our pitching did good, our fielding did good we just didn't drive in the runs we needed to.”
Glockner's also left basepaths crowded stranding eight runners in the contest, but was still able to pick a 4-3 victory to keep their perfect record intact.
Michael Rice took the hill for Glockner's. Rice went the distance, giving up three earned runs on seven hits walking two and recorded nine punch outs while picking up the win.
Despite, throwing well for DESCO, Phil Ashcraft was hit with the loss. Ashcraft allowed four earned runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out five in five innings of work. Chris Robinson came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings.
DESCO left runners on base in all but two innings. Both of those innings the side was retired in order.
Rice was able to leave many DESCO runners on the basepaths by striking out the final batter of the inning, which he did in the third and then repeated that performance in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
“I just had good control and had good location on my fastball,” said Rice. “I just tried to throw a lot of strikes, tried to get the ball in play. I knew I had a good defense behind me to back me up.”
Glockner's scored in the opening frame when Nolan Crabtree singled in Matt Marshall to give his team a 1-0 lead. Another run was added in the third inning when Josh Duduit knocked in Rice to double the lead. DESCO answered in the home half of the inning when Ashcraft plated Bob Tackett on a sacrifice.
Glockner's scored two big insurance runs in the fifth inning Judd White singled in both Logan and Nolan Crabtree to extend the Glockner's lead back to two runs. In the home half on the frame DESCO cut the lead in half when Travis Stuartt scored Tackett on a sacrifice fly.
DESCO had men the bases loaded in the sixth inning but could not come up with a hit to drive in the runs and Glockner's pulled out the victory.
