The Issue: Wheelersburg, South Webster in state finals

Our View: Stellar seasons result in historic achievement

It's an exciting time for any community when a high school basketball team earns a berth in the state championship.

In Scioto County, South Webster and Wheelersburg both get the chance to pull for their teams during this week's 84th Ohio High School Athletic Association State Tournament in Columbus.

The regional championships by the Jeeps and Pirates resulted in history being made. This season marked the first time Scioto County sent two teams to the state tournament in the same season.

Beyond that, Scioto County stands to become the first rural county to ever have multiple state champions in the same season. Three counties (Cuyahoga, Hamilton and Montgomery) have accomplished the feat, but all possess metropolitan cities.

South Webster coach Marc Kreischer and Wheelersburg coach Tom Barrick have already coached their teams to remarkable seasons. Becoming one of only four teams left in a statewide division is testament to the quality of any team, and fans should recognize the significance of two Scioto County teams doing it in the same season.

These teams have already represented Scioto County well, just by their appearances, although both are seeking the top prize.

But win or lose, these teams are deserving of congratulations for making 2005-06 a special season for Scioto County.
