Scioto County Sheriff’s Detective Jodi Conkel says the three-year-old female sibling of Neylan Wilson told her that the child’s father hit the infant.

Conkel told a jury in the murder trial of Brandon Wilson, while she was interviewing the child, before she could ask any questions, it blurted out - “Daddy hurt bubby.”

Conkel said the child went on to say - “Bubby was crying. Daddy was mad. Daddy hit bubby.”

Wilson, 23, of 1202 Rosemount Road, is on trial in the death of 10-month-old Neylan Wilson, who died on Nov. 19, 2012 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Officials at the hospital reported they were treating a 10-month-old infant for several life-threatening injuries including a skull fracture.

Conkel said she had a Raggedy Ann doll and asked the child to show her what her father had done to her brother. Conkel said the child indicated her father had hit the baby twice.

“What did he (Neylan) do after daddy hit him,” Conkel asked. “She said, ‘bubby cried.’”

Assistant Scioto County Prosecutor Pat Apel played one audio interview Conkel had done with Brandon Wilson at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and two subsequent video interviews that had been done at later dates at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.

Conkel repeatedly asked Wilson what happened to the baby and he told her repeatedly he did not know. He did bring up an incident in which he said two weeks before the baby’s death, he had fallen down several stairs. He told Conkel he was not in the room when it happened, but found the baby on the landing at the foot of the stairs.

Conkel continued to tell Wilson doctors had said the type of injuries suffered by Neylan Wilson could not have been from a fall two weeks before. Wilson continued to tell Conkel nothing happened while he was with the child, and Conkel continued to say that only Wilson, the three-year-old and the baby were in the house. The mother, Tierra Simeona was at work at the time.

“When you found out he had a skull fracture, what were you thinking?” Conkel asked.

“It could have been when he fell down the stairs,” Wilson responded.

About 30 minutes into the interview, Wilson said there had also been a time when the baby had fallen off the couch.

“Why didn’t you tell me that?” Conkel asked. Wilson also said the baby had fallenout of a shopping cart at an area store.

At one point during the interview, Conkel told Wilson - “I can’t make it go away, but I can make it a lot easier for you.”

Conkel asked if he would take a voice stress analysis test. It was shortly after that, that Wilson said - “I don’t know if I should have a lawyer.”

Conkel responded - “That’s up to you. But if you’re telling the truth there shouldn’t be a problem.”

Wilson ended the interview with - “I think I want to talk to a lawyer before I do that.”

The trial continues today, with the defense expected to present it’s case as early as Monday.
