Jane Murray, who is challenging incumbent Mayor James Kalb in the Nov. 3 election, has received the endorsement of the Area Political Committee of AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees) Ohio Council 8, and AFSCME Ohio Retiree Chapter 1184, AFL-CIO.

“I am pleased to have their endorsement which says that they know that I know how to handle government,” Murray said.

Murray talked about the importance to her campaign of the rank and file of that union.

“That union represents all city employees except for police and fire, and I’m glad that they realize that I have the skill set to lead — not only the city but the employees for it,” Murray said. “My approach is one where I work as a a team, and I ask for their input and their ideas on how we can provide our services better and more efficiently and more cost effectively to the public.”

AFSCME also endorsed Steven Mowery for Portsmouth Municipal Judge, Kenneth Meddock and Dan Shirey for the Northwest District School Board, and Margaret Strickland for Rush Township Trustee.

“Before winning Council 8’s endorsement, each candidate completes a questionnaire and meets face-to-face with the area screening committee,” Carolyn Bishop, chairperson of the Athens Region committee and president of AFSCME Local 3501 said. “Recommendations on ballot issues are only made after a thorough study by our committee members. We believe that these individuals represent the best choice for AFSCME members and their families.”
