A jury delivered the verdict of not guilty Wednesday in the case of a Portsmouth man charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of his 5-week-old daughter in August 2007 while the family was vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Miles Ferguson, 26, went on trial in a Conway, S.C., court room Nov. 9, and the prosecution rested its case on Monday. On Tuesday, the defense began calling expert witnesses. They then put Ferguson on the stand on his own behalf. That testimony was followed by character witnesses. Wednesday, the defense presented closing arguments and late Wednesday afternoon the judge charged the jury with the case, according to a spokeswoman for the Horry County Solicitor's office.
About 100 people from Scioto County traveled to Horry County as a show of support for Ferguson.

This is wonderful news...this poor family has lived a nightmare for more than two years. Thank God, the people on the jury had enough sense to listen to reason and not just to the one-sided presentation of the prosecution who purposely tried to railroad this fine young man. As in so many cases, our area included, the prosecution should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to unfairly tilt the scales of justice just to get a "win" with no concern for actual justice.
THANK GOD AN INNOCENT MAN WASN'T IMPRISONED. I'M SORRY FOR YOUR FAMILY'S LOSS BUT MILES WOULD NEVER HURT HIS CHILD, MAY TIME HEAL THIS FAMILIES WOUNDS AND HEARTS, HOW SAD TO BE ACCUSED OF KILLING YOUR INFANT. FINALLY SOME REAL JUSTICE, THIS ROAD IS OVER NOW THE HEALING CAN BEGIN:) I HOPE YOU TWO HAVE MANY CHILDREN AND YEARS TOGETHER. SINCERELY, KS
