Board Of Elections Releases Ballot Information

Elections are now just 16 days away; do you know the candidates and issues you’ll be asked to choose from?

According to a list provided by the Scioto County Board of Elections (BOE) on Tuesday, the following candidates and issues will be found on ballots Nov. 3.

In Portsmouth, candidates for mayor include James Kalb, Jane Murray and Jerry Skiver (write-in). For City Council, Kevin Johnson and Michael Mearan are both vying for the First Ward seat; Nicholas Basham and Bob Mollette are competing for the Third Ward seat; and John Haas is running unopposed for the Fifth Ward seat.

Other candidates for village councils include Ralph Imes Jr., Terry Salyers and Robert Law (write-in) for New Boston; Karl Rose, Suzanne Nichols and Wells Miller (group petition) for Otway; Roger McAllister, Shirley Syroney and Ronald Syroney for Rarden; and Steven Bouts and Neil Stroth for South Webster.

Sixteen townships have trustee races. Those on the ballots include Steve Brown, Carl Koenig and Charles Nichols for Brush Creek; Michelle Adams, David Rivers; Terry Foster and Monty White for Rarden; Brian Fenton, Duane Hagen, Walter Hamilton, Linda Simmering Hoover and Gregory Thompson for Bloom; Tim Hines and Howard Richard for Clay; Jim Gallion, Jeff Gullett, Lloyd Moore, Steve Ruggles and Noah Waddell Jr. for Green; Brett McCormick, Robert Raby, Calvin Seibert and Mike Stanley for Harrison; Donald Buckle, Earl Canter, James Picklesimer and Paul Reed for Jefferson; David Conkey, Donald Lambert Jr., Chris Rase, Jim Preston and Kenneth Reed for Madison; Terry Altman, Ray Carver, Rufus Montgomery, Dennis Jenkins, Dave Moore, Brad Phipps and Jason Throckmorton for Morgan; Charlie Cooper, Ken Mundhenk and Gene Ridout for Nile; Jim Gill, Loren Purdom, Jeffrey Rase and Vernal Riffe IV for Porter; Tim Horner, Tim Knittle, Bill Stephens and Margaret Strickland for Rush; Ralph Edward Montavon and Roger Webb for Union; John Kent Sr., Teddie Weeks and Terry Williams for Valley; Curtis Besco, James Vic Justice, Clyde McCleese, Teresa Wallace and Mart Wicker for Vernon; and Bernard Bell, Doug Coleman, Jim McGraw, Steve Galloway Jr. and Bob Roark for Washington.

Also, Steve Mowery and James Scott Smith are competing for the seat of Scioto County Municipal Judge.

There also seems to be a lot of school board activity this election season. Forty-nine candidates are running for seats in 10 school districts. They are: Barbara Borden-Gibson and George Pettit for Portsmouth; Nancy Clever, Elaine Newberry Evans, Catherine Miller, Jeff Moore, Johnny Whisman and Patty Fannin (unexpired term) for New Boston; Brenda Dyer, Timothy Horner and Charles Queen for Bloom Vernon; Donald Caseman Jr., Craig Gilliland and Annie Riffe for Clay; Sandra Cherry, Thomas Davis, David Knapp, Tanner Salyers, James Skeens, Stacy McCallister, Loretta Dixon and Roger Collett (unexpired term) for Green; Johnnie Brian Adams, David Bennett, Stephen Crabtree, Cliff Jenkins Jr., John Cart Jr., Troy Huff and Anita McGinnis for Minford; Edward Cable, Jill Carver, Barry Crabtree, Ed Crabtree, Kenneth Meddock and Dan Shirey for Northwest; Rob Call, Kevin Gahm, Kathy Hawk Goins and Chuck Turner for Valley; Craig Hazelbaker, Scott Journey and Harold Sayre for Washington-Nile; and Michael Burk, Matt Miller, Donna Cunningham, Rory Phillips and Mark Spriggs II (write-in) for Wheelersburg.

Paul Crabtree and Gary Piatt also are running for seats with the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center.

Liquor permits are found on the ballot next month, including Wal-Mart in New Boston, Kenny’s Convenient Mart in Jefferson Township, and Kroger and Speedeemart in Porter Township. Speedway Super America also has an option on the ballot, but its purpose was not expressly provided on the list provided by the BOE.

Finally, 14 local communities have tax levies on the ballot — including a renewal levy for current expenses in New Boston; replacement levy for current expenses in Otway, replacement ambulance levies in each village and township of Rarden; renewal fire levy and additional cemeteries levy in Clay Township; replacement fire levy in Green Township; replacement ambulance and fire levies in Harrison Township; replacement senior citizens levy in Jefferson Township; replacement fire, ambulance and roads levies in Madison Township; renewal EMS, roads and bridges, and fire levies in Porter Township; replacement fire levy in Union Township; renewal fire, and roads and bridges levies in Valley Township, and renewal roads levy in Washington Township.

The United Scioto Senior Activities (USSA) also has a senior citizens renewal levy for all of Scioto County.
