CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals released former Portsmouth and Penn State standout Gerald Cadogan from their practice squad on Tuesday.
The offensive lineman was signed Nov. 3 to the practice squad after a preseason stint with the Carolina Panthers.
"It's such a fluid process with these teams and their rosters," Shawn Smith, Cadogan's agent and president of X-A-M Sports & Entertainment, said. "Things change day to day or even hour to hour. Gerald, at this point, has good understanding of business side of NFL after going through the transitions he's gone through this year."
The All-Big Ten pick from 2008 impressed with his athleticism at the combine, running the fourth-fastest 40 time of all offensive lineman. However, he went undrafted in this year's draft before signing with the Carolina Panthers hours after the draft's conclusion.
The Panthers released Cadogan Aug. 31 and he spent two months conditioning and auditioning with other teams before getting a call from the Bengals last week.
"Any time you're on the practice squad or even 53-man you always know things can change," Smith said. "Teams change and they have to respond to certain injuries. He was prepared for anything."
"Anything" is just what happened in a sequence of events leading up to Cadogan's release.
On Sunday, wide receiver Chris Henry went down on the Bengals first offensive snap of the second quarter with a broken left forearm, and was placed on the injured reserve. To replace Henry on the roster, the Bengals brought lineman Scott Kooistra back. Kooistra had been cut by the team just last week. The seventh-year lineman, like Cadogan, is versatile enough to play multiple spots on the line.
With Kooistra replacing Henry on the roster, the Bengals were short in the wide receiver department. Cincinnati fixed that by re-signing Freddie Brown, who the team had drafted in March, to the practice squad.
To make room, they released Cadogan, who was the most-recent addition to the practice squad.
The first-year lineman will now go back to work preparing for his next call.
"The chances are extremely high (for Cadogan to find another team)," Smith said. "I think any team that's looking to bring in a young offensive lineman is going to have him on the radar screen. It's a matter of opportunity and timing... Something could happen tomorrow, next week or two weeks from now. His job is to be ready (when the next call comes) and he will fulfill his side. He's done an excellent job of being in good shape."
Smith didn't rule out the potential for Cadogan, like Kooistra, to return to Cincinnati.
"The feedback was very positive," Smith said. "Obviously the experience was very positive for him and he hopes that the Bengals will call him back and bring him back in once they get their roster straightened out... I wouldn't be surprised to get a call from the Bengals any time."
Until the call comes, be it from Cincinnati or another team, Cadogan will be the same place he's been for years — working and preparing.
