A joint effort by United Way of Scioto County and American Electric Power will result in mortgage and rent payments for some low-income Scioto County residents.

“We have received a grant from AEP, and it is to help with hunger and housing during the holiday season,” Mary Ann Miers-Peercy, United Way executive director, said. “We received $13,000 as a grant from AEP, and we’re going to use that as a housing initiative here in Scioto County.”

Miers-Peercy said the grant was for people at 200 percent of the poverty level.

“You have to have an AEP bill and your picture I.D. You need to come to us and provide proof of income. We will start it at the first of the year. It will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. And when it is gone it will be gone for the year,” Miers-Peercy said. “It is to help pay for their security deposit, their actual mortgage bill, or their rent for the month. It is to keep people off the streets — and to help with homelessness in our area.”

Miers-Peercy said the United Way is looking to help at least 60 people with the grant.

“That’s what we project with the money that we have,” Miers-Peercy said. “It depends on where that rental assistance is. Some individuals are only $100. But it will be up to $500 to help. So it just depends on where that range is for us to be able to pay out.”

Eleven foodbanks and 49 United Way agencies around Ohio have been designated by AEP to help families through the holiday season with donations totaling $1 million.

The gift is part of AEP Ohio’s three-year, $15 million Partnership with Ohio program. In addition to the holiday donations to help with hunger, health and housing, in 2009 the program also helped families in need of assistance pay their electric bills through the AEP Ohio Neighbor-to-Neighbor program.

According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report issued last week, Ohio’s “food insecurity” rate has grown to 13.3 percent in 2008 — the highest since 1995.
