PDT Sports Report

The Division III Southeast District track and field tournament began earlier this week and after the first day’s events, Wheelersburg leads the local pack in team rankings.

The Lady Pirates finished ranked first in the girls South Division with 22.33 points while the Pirates finished third with 15 points.

Two local athletes finished first in their events with Wheelersburg’s Erica Schmidt topping the South Division’s High Jump competition and Shance Rollins of Portsmouth recording the best distance in the South Division’s Shot Put competition.

After Schmidt, Portsmouth’s Ri-chiel McGraw tied with Jordan Spencer of Wheelersburg for the second-best high jump in the South. Andrea Marchyn of Notre Dame and Taylor Shonkwiler of South Webster both tied for the fifth-best jump.

Carrie Coriell of Valley came in second in the South’s Shot Put event and Clay’s Sarah Burton placed fourth.

Another high finish was recorded by both the boys and girls 4x800-Meter Relay teams from Wheelersburg.

Sarah Willis, Lauren Bays, Megan Swick and Alyssa Conn combined to give the Lady Pirates a third place finish in the South Division’s 4x800 race with a time of 11:09.51.

The ‘Burg boys team of Max Conley, Tyler Claxon, Eddie Miller and Brian Stiers finished fourth in the 4x800 with a time of 8:56.04.

Valley’s Curt Crabtree had the fourth-best discus throw and Wheelersburg’s Ross Pyles had the seventh-best throw.

The Division III Southeast District Tournament continues 10 a.m. today at Oak Hill.
