The Wheelersburg golf team’s hopes of making it to the state tournament ended during Tuesday’s Division III District Tournament at Cumberland Trails Golf Course in Pataskala.

The Pirates finished with a team score of 338, good enough for ninth out of the 12 teams who participated. Columbus Wellington (309), Columbus Academy (309), Columbus Tree of Life (319) and Sugarcreek Garaway (321) were the four teams that advance to the state tournament.

Wheelersburg was paced by Mitchell McFarland, who fired a 79 for the day. Ben Arnold finished with an 81, Austin Stevenson shot an 87, Michael MacDonald recorded a 91 and Nick Ferguson carded a 98.

Western’s Chandler Grooms went into the clubhouse with a 92. Grove City Christian’s Cameron Michalak (73), Powell Village Academy’s Jeg Coughlin (74), Coal Grove’s Brent Morgan (76) and Waterford’s Branden Offenberger (77) advanced as individuals to the state tournament. Michalak tied Tree of Life’s Mark David Wright for low round of the afternoon.

The Division III State Tournament will take place Oct.12-13 at the North Star Golf Resort in Sunbury. Arnold, Ferguson and Grooms all played their final matches for their respective schools as seniors.

VOLLEYBALL

Clay def. East 25-13, 25-10, 25-11

Visiting Clay had no issues with East, sweeping the Tartans in Tuesday’s SOC I action.

The Panthers picked up a huge game from Gabby Hickman, who recorded 17 points — 11 coming off aces — and 18 assists. Sarah Pelfrey added six kills.

Notre Dame def. Green 25-19, 25-12, 25-11

Notre Dame improved to 15-3 on the season with Tuesday’s sweep over SOC I rival and host Green.

Libby Welsh finished with 15 points, five of them coming off aces, while eight of Olivia Nelson’s 14 points came the same way. Madi Phillips recorded 20 digs. The Titans host Western Thursday.

West def. Valley 25-14, 25-27, 25-23, 25-15

With a fully-healthy roster, host West notched its second win of the season with a four-set victory over SOC II foe Valley.

Kayla Webb had 110 assists while Megan Shupert finished with five kills in the victory for the Lady Senators, who move to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in SOC II play with the win. They travel Thursday to Northwest.

South Webster def. Wheelersburg 25-23, 25-5, 25-18

After a difficult first set, host South Webster took care of Wheelersburg in straight sets in Tuesday’s SOC II action.

Full statistics were unavailable at press time. The Jeeps host Waverly Thursday in a battle of the SOC II’s two top teams. The Tigers captured the first meeting.

SOCCER

South Webster 5, Valley 0

Kyle Keaton’s hat trick aided host South Webster to a 5-0 SOC I victory over Valley.

Along with his three goals, Keaton also recored an assist on the first goal of the afternoon scored by Derek Rowe. Lance Swords stopped both shots on goals he faced for the Jeeps while Scott Adkins turned away 10 shots as the Indians keeper.

South Webster travels Thursday to Clay.
