Love is in the air

As most might guess, my activities director, travel agent, and squeeze would be one in the same – Little Laura. I write about events and places we’ve been but they’re trips that she orchestrated.

Everyday, I’m thankful for having her to come home to and we will spend the evening together. This is good and fairly typical of most marriages; however, it’s on these trips that I see her all day long and it’s there that I see her with our children and our grandchildren. This is when I see her in that “oh-so special” light that let’s me know just how deep this goes.

Sad but true, I was captivated by her paralyzing eyes and tantalizing smile (as Alan Jackson would say) at first sight. It was at a Notre Dame function in the parking lot on a summer night in 1964.

She had been working on a tan all summer and in the dark, still, “I saw her standing there” (Beatles).

Yes, sure ‘nuf there was a short madras dress with Weejuns, a big smile, and beautiful eyes standing there in the dark and it just seemed to me that it had my name written all over it.

Now this is where the cat and the big curious story might have been good to dwell on but no-o-o, I just had to go check it out.

I was totally smitten by her beauty and charm but it took me 7 years to admit it. Now, 50 years later, I see her as the great wife, mom, and mamaw that she’s become but I also see that little 17 year old charmer that I loved at first sight.

Obviously, I missed the Valentine press release this year but you know I can explain.

Little Laura and I were in Arizona celebrating Grandparent’s Day at Connor’s school and Valentine’s Day as well and what a special Valentine’s Day it was.

We were able to have 3 couples together on that very special day. My daughter, Amy and her husband, Chris were there. Grandson Connor was there with his girlfriend Caliegh and of course, Laura and myself. It was really unique to be a part of Amy’s Valentine’s Day and Connor’s as well. How often do you get the opportunity to help your grandson pick a Valentine’s gift? It’s pretty special just being asked, if you ask me. “Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’ll get.” (Forest Gump) Life is good.

Love is in the air in Arizona. (No clouds or smog – just love.)

It’s when I get away from farm, forest, and landscape for a few days that I really notice what I have at home. She truly is the love of my life and after all that time, kids, and grandkids – that’s pretty special.

“My advise to you is to get married; if you find a good wife, you’ll be happy. If not, you’ll become a philosopher.” – Socrates, Greek Philosopher (430-399 B.C,)
