The local boys and girls soccer programs are gearing up for the opportunity to showcase their skills in this weekend’s exhibition preview matches.
The boys’ preview will be held Friday at the New Boston Stadium. The first match will begin at 5 p.m. and admission is $5. The teams participating are St. Joesph, Piketon, Wheelersburg, Clay, Minford, South Webster, Northwest, Valley, West and New Boston.
The girls preview will take place a day later on Saturday at West High School. Admission will also be $5 and the first match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The teams scheduled to participate are Minford, St. Joesph, Wheelersburg, South Point, Wheelersburg, South Point, Chesapeake, West, Northwest and Fairland.
During both events, each game will consist of one 40-minute period.
Outgoing West athletic director Eric Nichols is not just excited because it’s the first year for the girls’ event, but it will also feature the first girls soccer match in the history of Wheelersburg athletics.
” … We’ve got increased involvement, not just in boys and girls soccer, but in all sports,” he said. “Girls or boys, there’s something for everyone. The area is maturing. It’s coming into its own. There’s more options out there for men and women to succeed.”
Nichols is ecstatic about the preview and the recognition the players will receive after this weekend.
“I’m excited that all of these (players) at all of these schools, they deserve to have this recognition,” Nichols said. “I want to do good things for our kids here at West and for all of these (players) because it is something that is very important.”
