Volleyball stresses Champions of Character during Skills Camp
During Shawnee State’s yearly volleyball skills camp, head coach Susan Shelton puts a focus on all types of skill development. She pushes the sixth to 12th graders to be better in passing, serving, setting and hitting.
However, each year, Shelton and her team sit the campers down for a short lecture, one that goes beyond the players’ talents on the court. The topic: becoming a Champion of Character both on and off the hardwood.
Champions of Character is a program developed by the NAIA which focuses on five values to be reinforced to student-athletes throughout their college careers. The NAIA Live 5 program teaches integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
For Shelton and her squad, emphasizing these values during camp is just as important as anything that can be learned on the court.
“We want to teach these young ladies to be great competitors and great volleyball players,” Shelton said. “However, more important than that is our effort to push them to be great stewards of the community. That’s why we take the time during all of our camps to make sure our campers understand the values of Live 5.
“It’s also a great way to make sure our student-athletes here at Shawnee State understand the principles. By teaching them during the camp, we are reinforcing how important it is to us.”
The volleyball team kicks off its 2014 campaign in just under three weeks at the Early Bird Tournament in Dearborn, Mich. The Bears first home match comes on Aug. 26 versus Mount Vernon Nazarene at 4 p.m.
Softball continues signing flurry, adding Andi Kleinman
Shawnee State has added another member to the 2015 softball team in South Point High School product, Andi Kleinman.
The South Point, Ohio, native was a four-year letter winner for the Lady Pointers behind the plate, leading the squad to an Ohio Valley Conference title and district semifinal appearance during her senior campaign. Kleinman racked up several awards during her four-year career including Freshman All-OVC and Second Team All-District honors as a first-year player, All-OVC and All-District nods as a sophomore and Honorable Mention All-OVC recognition as a senior.
Kleinman was coached by Tanner Heaberlin. Off the diamond, she was a member of the marching band for South Point. She is the daughter of Carl and Deloris Kleinman.
