Head volleyball coach Susan Shelton has released the 2014 volleyball schedule Wednesday. The Bears will compete in 15 home matches, nine bouts on the road and a pair of tournaments away from home.

Shawnee State opens the season at the Early Bird Tournament in Dearborn, Mich., versus Indiana University-South Bend on Aug. 22. They will face Lawrence Tech immediately following the first match. The next day, the Bears square off against host-squad University of Michigan-Dearborn and Madonna University to close out the classic.

Three days later, on Aug. 26, the Bears will play host to a tri-match with Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Columbus State Community College.

Following a road matchup against the College of Mount St. Joseph on Sept. 3, SSU will prepare for four matches over three days at Waller Gymnasium during Alumni Weekend.

The Bears open up Mid-South Conference play at home on Sept. 10 versus Lindsey Wilson. Throughout the rest of the month, the squad rotates home and away bouts, heading to Campbellsville University (Sept. 13), hosting Cumberland University (Sept. 19), on the road against Cedarville University (Sept. 20), at home against the University of Pikeville (Sept. 24) and closing the month at Georgetown College (Sept. 30).

The month of October opens with a road match versus the University of the Cumberlands on the Oct. 3, before a home contest against St. Catharine College on Oct. 6. During the weekend of Oct. 10-11, the Bears will play in the Bob Evans Classic in Rio Grande, Ohio.

On Oct. 14, the Bears travel to Indiana University East before returning home for a conference matchup with Campbellsville. One day later, SSU travels south for matches against Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland.

The Bears take on Ohio Christian University and West Virginia Tech on Oct. 21 in a tri-match at home, and then enjoy a week off before heading to Pikeville on Oct. 28.

SSU closes the season with two home MSC contests against Georgetown and the Cumberlands, which marks senior night for four Bear players.

Coach Shelton boasts a squad that features 10 returners from last season, when the squad finished 17-15 with a 9-9 mark in the Mid-South. Shelton returns much of her front line, as four players with at least 200 kills last season are back on the roster.

Senior Paige Zelich led that group with 321 kills. Fellow senior Kristi Humble should provide a presence at the net, boasting a team-high 15 solo blocks last season while adding 58 block assists and 234 kills.

On the back line, junior Madison Smith returns after collecting 359 digs last season, while sophomore setter Bonnie Huesing added 485 assists.
