CORRECTION: Hayden Baker plays first base, and Daniel Ogg plays shortstop.

Usually, only baseball purists can enjoy a pitchers duel. But Saturday’s matchup between Notre Dame and Huntington Ross had spectators on the edge of their seats.

Leading 1-0 with one out in the top of the seventh inning, Notre Dame left fielder Gage Oberling misplayed a fly ball in the bright afternoon sky. With the tying run in scoring position, center fielder Jack Kayser missed his cut-off man, allowing the runner to advance to third. But a heads-up play by shortstop Hayden Baker nailed the runner at third as he overshot the bag, resulting in the second out in the innning.

The very next batter, Oberling would make up for his error with a diving grab to end the game.

Titan head coach Drew Mader was proud of his team’s effort.

“Ross is a good team from a great conference,” he said. “They play some good competition. It was a great game.”

Notre Dame pitcher Tyson Montgomery pitched a complete-game shutout in the victory. He only allowed three Huntsmen batters to reach base, allowing two hits and a walk.

“Tyson pitched a great game,” Mader said. “He kept the ball low, he had a good curve working today and had good command of his fastball.”

With so many balls hit into play, the Titan defense needed to be solid. Notre Dame committed only one fielding error on the day, which kept the Huntsmen runners off of the base paths.

“The defense was very, very good,” Mader said. “Rome Tovine had some huge stops at third, and Daniel Ogg had some huge stops at second.”

The win improve’s Notre Dame’s record to 11-2. They are 9-0 in the SOC I. They travel to Minford to take on the Falcons on Tuesday.
