It’s not every day high school athletes come to realize their dreams of playing college athletics. It’s even rarer when high school sensations reach their goals while staying close to home.
Both of those aspirations came true for Minford standout Kelsey Conkey, who signed with the University of Rio Grande.
“I like Rio,” Conkey said. “They had a really nice campus and it’s close to home.”
The Redstorm signed Conkey has a pitcher but she has the ability to be an effective hitter at the collegiate level. During her junior campaign with the Falcons, Conkey hit .471, which was second on the team. She also lead Minford with 17 RBI.
However, despite her success at the plate, Conkey’s trademark is on the mound, where she had a 0.87 ERA during her junior season.
“They recruited me as a pitcher but my bat is pretty good also, I can play shortstop,” Conkey said.
Although she has dominated SOC hitters, Conkey has a desire to improve her game before her freshman season at Rio Grande.
“I need to work on my different pitches, keep mixing it up,” Conkey said.
However, before Conkey can begin her first campaign with the Redstorm, she has some unfinished business to attend too, as her senior year with the Falcons unfolds.
“We didn’t get to go to the tournament last year, I want to focus on making a deep run in the tournament and winning the SOC,” Conkey said.
